DeFi and payments news
New Zealand is the latest country to get a highly-compliant stablecoin counterpart for its fiat currency. Techemynt, a New Zealand-based financial provider, has launched NZDs, a stablecoin backed by the New Zealand dollar. As the tenth most-traded currency, enabling the New Zealand dollar as a stablecoin should add even more demand for crypto payments in day-to-day spending.
Major Cineplex Group, the largest movie theater chain in Thailand is set to accept Bitcoin as part of a pilot project launching this year. This move aims to attract more tourists with cryptocurrency to the country, particularly those from Japan.
The Kessler Collection, a luxury hotel group, has become the first vacation-oriented operator to accept cryptocurrency. In partnership with BitPay, hotel guests can use a variety of cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin, Ether and stablecoins to pay for their stay. Kessler hopes to attract international guests, save on processing fees, and reduce risk in accepting digital currencies instead of fiat.
Visa and Mastercard were planning to increase US merchant fees this year, but have opted to delay the hike until April 2022 due to the ongoing pandemic. Meanwhile, in the UK, Visa is looking to increase merchant fees for online debit card acceptance. (Visa is also under investigation by the US Department of Justice for unlawful practices that could have given it an unfair competitive advantage in the market.)
